Should job search be determined by time of year?
I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that tax season puts many job seekers on hold in the CPA profession. But short of profession-specific circumstances, there is no slow season in which to avoid a job search.
Q1 represents a new calendar year and many employers are inclined to add staff, a move that probably was projected from Q4 of the previous year.
Employers that relocate executives are considerate of the fact that families want to be settled in before school begins, so many offers are extended during Q2.
Companies whose fiscal year begins July 1 bring new budgets with which to hire, stimulating Q3 activity.
What about November and December? I believe many would be surprised at the volume of hiring that occurs during Q4.
In this market, all job seekers should be mindful of the process required to conduct a proper job search. Considering the research, planning and hunting involved, it’s always a good time to begin and sustain a good job search.
With so much competition, how do companies select the ideal candidate?
Employers have specific needs. When selecting a candidate from a resume, the employer has spotted something that leads them to believe the candidate can meet those needs. Who gets the job in the end? Hiring managers are not looking to provide challenge, opportunity for advancement or stability for their hires, so don’t go there on paper or during an interview. The more a candidate can reflect past performance on the job, the more likely the candidate will be selected.
Employers must also believe that a hire will commit to a reasonable stay. They will ultimately select candidates who are compatible with their company’s work style and office environment.
