Ohio employee confidence drops
The Ohio Employee Confidence Index decreased 6.5 points to 38.8 in September, according to the latest Spherion Employment Report.
More results from the report include:
- Nearly 79% believe there are fewer jobs available
A 12 percentage-point increase from the previous August
- 33% are not confident in their ability to find a new job
Versus 14% in August
- A quarter believe it is likely they will lose their jobs in the next year
An increase of 10 percentage points from August
- 42% are likely to look for new jobs in the next 12 months
Compared to 31% in August
According to Robert Schulte, Spherion franchise owner in Ohio, “More workers revealed that they are likely to look for new jobs in the next year, representing nearly half of all Ohio workers. This should send a strong signal to employers that despite a slow economy, retention plans should not be taking a backseat during this critical time.”
In tough economic times, there are several strategies and benefits that businesses can implement to retain and engage their employees. A few ideas from Mercer’s 2008 Report on Human Capital Management for Slow Growth Times include:
- Be looking for new ways to generate sustainable reductions in benefit costs using innovative strategies that do not adversely affect perceived value
- Implement creative, highly-targeted strategies to recruit and retain the optimal workforce for long-term success
- Communicate often and honestly to employees to bolster flagging engagement and productivity
